It’s one of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverages, and easily one of its most popular. But after spending years as the drink of choice for pub goers around the world, a handful of boutique breweries in Singapore are dragging the venerable mug of beer out from behind the bar counter and into the hands of champagne swilling connoisseurs.

These microbreweries are transforming beer brewing into an art form similar to that of winemaking. From its unusual production techniques to the resulting assortment of flavours, these concoctions, known as craft beers, have become a hit with both men and women.

These are unfiltered brews containing live yeast that makes it more flavourful and nutritious. Commercial beers in kegs, cans or bottles are filtered to remove the yeast and proteins — key components to enhancing its flavour — in order to extend its shelf life for storage at room temperature. Craft beers are produced in limited quantities and are best consumed within three months.
